6. Noticing the Ignored

You’ve GOT MAIL

As much as I looked at a lot of inspirational material, condensing everything that was both up to par as well as feasible for an issue. This time I wanted to go for something minimal as I did not want to keep going through the same collage loop, then again I wanted something that gathers up everything. The stamp was an impulse idea that just clicked. Mailing things is one way of getting people’s attentions, especially nowadays were we communicate electronically most of the time.

In the artwork I included elements from various happenings that took place in Sanctuary Street. Starting off with the most evident, the church is one of the main attractions of the town. It is popular on the island also because of the locations: it is one of the few churches that is not situated in a square, but rather a straight road that leads up to it. In relation to that, Żabbar became a parish in 1616. in 2016, the town celebrated the 4th centenary. In relation to this, further to the right, the bicycle is a representation of the yearly Cyclists’ Pilgrimage that takes place during the Żabbar local feast.

Moving on to the right, the clock represents the exact time, 1:10pm, which the Vulcan aeroplane exploded and crashed in Żabbar on 14th October, 1975. This event is still commemorated in various parts of the town; there is a street named after it, as well as houses that bear that name.

On the bottom right is the monument of P.E. Agatha Barbara, 3rd President and the first female president of Malta. Her presidential term was between 1982 and 1987. She was also born and lived all her life in Sanctuary Street.

As for the text in the artwork, starting from top left and going clockwise, it is the name of the street in Maltese and the geographical co-ordinates; the price of a typical Maltese stamp. Citta’ Hompesch is the name given to Żabbar when the village became a city by order of the last GrandMaster of the Order of St. John in Malta. Lastly, I included the postcode of the street.

In an unexpected turning of events, I am very happy with the end result. Maybe I can even extend this idea to different streets. My town could use some positive promotion.
