The Science and Magic of Applied Imagination: FInAL OUTCOME

The origami exercise worked. After a couple of misfires and a few extra cups of coffee, I managed to make the double star flexicube, I mentioned in previous blog posts. I chose origami as I wanted to combine the creative and technical aspects of my way of thinking. You can read more about it here.

The idea behind the two modular shapes is to show the link between the conscious – which is what we are aware of and what we project to the world, and subconscious mind – which sits deeper within. In addition, I also wanted to show fluidity of thoughts and how they are affected by external experiences.

One can also see that I added patterns on each of the modules. I chose the Memphis style as it is very lively and expressive. It gives that ‘buzzing’ feeling just by looking at it, which is similar to the feeling when generating ideas. I wanted to convey that feeling to the viewer and it was my attempt to visualise fuzzy thoughts. One can also see that the patterns on the outer shell are simpler and more orderly compared to the ones on the inner shape. Again, they represent the conscious and the unconscious mind respectively. It was a very meticulous exercise and frustrating at times. However, it was very rewarding in the end. Definitely worth the effort.
