‘The Muscles of Creativity’ – as explained by Michael Wolff
Explaining the term ‘creativity’ or how it ‘works’ to someone outside the creative industry can be a challenge, for it is a very abstract term. Us creative people can understand the meaning even if we do not know how to explain it to each other, for we experience all the different feelings an emotions whenever we are feeling ‘creative’.
However, Michael Wolff, a British Graphic Designer, used a very simple yet effective metaphor to explain what makes up creativity. He describes it as a set of three muscles, namely: curiosity, appreciation and imagination.
As creative people, we are constantly asking questions, seeking answers and wandering to see what is beyond what we see with the naked eye. In relation to this, we know how to appreciate, and sometimes even empathise more, for we understand better what it takes in making something out of nothing. Lastly, the ‘muscle’ of imagination, probably the strongest out of the three, is the ‘muscle’ that enables us humans to combine bits and pieces of what we come across and what we go through together in a myriad of combinations and come up with a new result.
