Noticing The Ignored
The theme for this week is learning how to see, capture and record what is happening around us. This week’s lecture was full of inspirational resources from various areas of Graphic Design, from paper craft to film. Each example was unique in its own way and they communicate their message is their own style.
I really enjoyed listening and reading further about the Situationist International. Their experimental and expressive artworks invokes a mixture of emotions that just make you want to grab you sketchbook and scribble the day away. Which is what happened in my case…
I followed up on what was discussed in the lecture, and was supposed to make notes, but I got a little carried away. The collage book Memoires by Asger Jorn was one of my favourite examples, along with Stephen Gill’s Hackney Flowers and Laura Coombs Start with a Mark. This week looks like its going to be as fun as the last. Lots of inspiring resources and to tap into. I just have to learn how to draw a line at some point. It is like a chain reaction of curiosities. I always start with one thing, and I end up somewhere completely different.
In addition to that, I also watched one of the episodes of John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, a four-part series about Western aesthetics and culture. In this episode, Berger talked about how the camera affected the way we see and interpret art. I will be writing more about this in a separate post. I really enjoyed reading and looking up the works of this week’s lecture. I have a couple of ideas for this week’s challenge, but it is still hazy, like always.
