Nike X Ben & Jerry’s – Meet the ‘Chunky Dunky’

Ben & Jerry Nike SB Dunk Low Chunky Dunky Green Multi CU3244-100 ...

I was bouncing around the internet for a bit for this week’s challenge. Simply because I wanted to find something cool to write about. I was a bit in the blue these couple of days (a mix of busy workdays, internet being a nuisance and the stale, humid Mediterranean weather), so I really wanted something colourful and fun to look at and read about

The Ben and Jerry’s idea was a totally random. However, nothing beats the joys of an ice-cream on a hot summer day, right? So I kept following on that idea. I have to say that initially, I was going to write about how Ben and Jerry came to be Ben and Jerry, however, on second thought, I figured that it was more of a partnership rather than a collaboration, as both of them started the ice-cream business from the ground up and it is still going strong, rather than working on a one-time project with a beginning and an end. To which is why I changed course and wrote about this Nike collaboration. Now that I look back, I remember hearing about this on the radio a few weeks ago. It had made news because of how quickly the shoes were sold, even though the world is going through a financial crisis due to the pandemic.

It was a fun exercise, and really enjoyed reading about how the ice-cream company and the sneaker manufacturer got to work together on this project. It was a relatively smooth and straight forward approach, as you will read on later in my write below.

Another part of the exercise was that the final presentation should be laid out and presented as a piece of editorial design. This was the best part of the exercise. It had been a while since I worked on editorial, so I really wanted to try something new. Given the style and colour palette of the sneakers and the Ben and Jerry’s brand, I wanted to make the final piece a colourful one. I drew inspiration also from the Memphis and Se Stijl styles for editorial design ideas and I just went for it. I hope you enjoy reading and looking at the final piece as much as I enjoyed working on it. Click on the image to expand.
