Mananni – Ta’ Gorg Pisani

I finally got round to completing the font book for the poem I chose last week. In all honesty I could have produced a sample of it and discussed it further in my blog, but it just did not feel right. It was quite time-consuming, but definitely worth the effort.

As explained in a previous post, the poem Mananni, is about a woman named Mananni, who is a laceweaver. The poem is a narration of how Mananni goes about her day weaving and how she reminisces about the luxurious food that will be placed on the tablecloth that she is making. The poem ends with Mananni heading to her kitchen and prepares a a small meal. She prepares a traditional Maltese sandwich with tomatoes, olive oil and traditional Gozitan peppered cheeselet. It is a light-hearted poem and invokes a positive, laidback mood. Written in relatively simple language that everyone can understand and relate to.

The style I used for the layout and typesetting of this piece can be compared to kinetic typography. I still made use of the grid, but in some of the pages I decided to move away from it to create a more fluid effect. As for the visual aspect, used the lace and embroidery effect to bring out the artisan side that is reiterated in the poem.
