#NOFILTER – THE TRUE SELF: WOrk-In-PROGRESS

This week was quite intense for me. I had very little knowledge in regards to the psychological aspect of human nature and the creative mind. I had to do quite a bit of research in order to cover this week’s lecture, but it was a very interesting learning curve for me. In addition, I did some brainstorming as to what will I do for the final outcome of this week.

Brainstorming and Sketching

My initial idea was to create some form of installation. I wanted to move away from the 2D. With that in mind, after some intense note-jotting in between meetings and overthinking at work, I thought of an idea involving layers. Layers as in, there are different layers that makes up our personality. Kind of like a very farfetched interpretation of The Iceberg Model; some of it is visible, other parts are hidden.

Then from layers, my idea transcends to filters, and triggered the idea of using stereoscopic techniques, and came up with ‘#NoFilter’.

The idea behind ‘#NoFilter’ is to show different layers of personality, However the core values are always present one way or another, in parts or as a whole, no matter what the conscious self is projecting.

This is me experimenting with lettering and stereoscopic techniques. For the time being I am using copy book covers as filters before proceed to buying acrylic sheets. The colours are a bit off, but for the sake of testing, it works.

This idea is to create an installation made up of three filters. However I am still unsure as to show the left and right sides of the brain, or to show the brain as the ‘logical’ side, and the heart is the ’emotional’ side.

In conjunction with this I am currently doing some research about the physics of light (reflection, absorption, etc.). I want to make sure that this project works.

Final Draughts and Digitising

Prior to digitising the artwork, I drew all the elements on tracing paper and layered them to see how will it look like. It made it easier for me to see what goes where, and to add and remove any elements as it deemed fit. As you can see from the pictures above and below, I also drew more elements, like the brain from the side and a heart. At first I was going to put the heart and the brain together, however, it did not really apply to this week’s topic. After all, there is no such thing as ‘thinking with your heart’.

I also created a diagram of how the installation will look like. Also, I have been testing out colours on the screen using copybook covers. I used them as a ‘make-shift’ filter to see if the concept works.

Props and Setting Up

It took me a while to get the right tones of red and blue on paper (on screen it worked straight away). I printed quite a few copies of the artwork that was to go at the back of the installation, but the installation itself was not as complex.

Probably the most challenging part was setting up the “studio”. For this part, I really had to improvise. Essentially, my pop-up photography/filming studio was set up in a corner in the living room blacked-out with sofa covers (which was good as they are sewn in square shapes. They fit the corner quite snuggly) and held back by a broomstick. I went all MacGyver on this one. Good thing I was home alone while doing this.

So far, this was the most demanding of all projects over this first month. You can check out the project by going to the Projects page or check out my other blog post here for a more in depth explanation of the project.
