1. Introduction

‘Who?’ ‘What?’ ‘Where?’ ‘Why?’ – My Answers.

Following my previous post, in this post I will be breaking down the quadriptych into four panels, one for every question.

‘Who?’

My name is Lindsay, I am a graphic designer. I like cats, makeup, quirky earrings and the colours black and yellow. Typography and branding are my two most favourite areas in graphic design. I am also into paisley patterns and collage.

What?

Back in 2012, I took part in a competition hosted by Nescafé, where participants had to create an embellishment design for one of their coffee machines. My design was chosen out of around 150 entries to represent Malta in the final in Milan, and I placed second in the overall voting. My design was inspired by traditional Maltese crafts, mainly lacework and filigree.

Where?

I am from Malta. It is a small island in the Mediterranean Sea with lots of character. In this panel I wanted to capture the various elements that make up Maltese heritage and also the diversity that can be found in such a small island, which is very inspirational.

One can also see that the word ‘Mela!’ is very prominent in this panel. The literal translation for this is ‘he filled’, as in ‘he filled a bucket with water’. However, in the Maltese language, ‘mela’ is a word with a myriad of meanings, depending on the context, position in a sentence and even the tone of voice. To this, it is the first word foreigners learn when they visit or move to Malta.

Why?

For the ‘why’, I went for a quote based on that of Saul Bass’s ‘design is thinking made visual’. I see Design as Art with a specific purpose. Whereas Art is appreciated for its aesthetics, Design is also appreciated for its function, be it tangible or abstract. Probably design can also be described as the end product when art and science come together.
