Mananni – Ta’ Gorg Pisani: Work-in-Progress
This week was supposed to be one of my favourite ones, if it was not for all the stress that I am going through because of work. This week was all about typography, which is was of my favourite branches of Graphic Design. It consisted of choosing a poem and interpret the text using various typographic techniques and experiments and come up with a creative solution.
I chose a poem called Mananni, written by Ġorġ Pisani. Mananni is the name of the protagonist of this poem. In the poem, the poet describes her typical day as she is working on her latest weaving. From what the poet suggest, Mananni was a sought after lace weaver, for he makes a reference to the elite, as she is thinking about what shall be put on the table cloth that she was working on. It is quite a lighthearted poem, with a very positive tone.
Having said that, designing the text with the right typeface required some thought. I looked at quite a few fonts. I wanted to use one typeface that came with various weight Finally I came across a rather bizarre font family. This is Fairwater and its various styles.
I was a bit skeptical first, but looking again at the poem, it seemed fitting as there are a lot of different elements mentioned in the poem and the various letterforms in this font makes way for more creative interpretations of the text.
In addition to this, as fun and interesting as it was, I struggled with executing the right idea for this task. Partly because I was tired, (these couple of weeks are tough) so my brain was switching on and off. After some thorough thinking, and a couple of naps, I decided to go for a lave weaving effect and create a font book. I wanted to put it in a spread, but I knew that the lace weaving would work really well.
However, as I started digitising, I realised that this is incredibly time consuming. I am risking not making the first deadline of Thursday, so next week I really have to double up. So far I got to 12 page, and mid-way to the poem. I need to up my speed on this one. As Christmas is coming, there is a lot of work coming in promoting casino offers, plus a few parties were it is good to attend to make your presence felt in in the iGaming industry. I am sure that it will be worth the wait though… cannot wait to finish the book. I know it will turn out for the best. These are some of the spreads that I have created so far…
